The sales figures of Desktop monitors are going down , due to laptops and tablet PCs. However, offices and power users prefer desktop than other counterparts due to various reasons. The prime reason behind this preference is display devices. Computing devices other than desktops do not have a flexible options for monitors. Here are the basic tips to consider while buying a computer monitor for desktop / laptop or other devices.

There are basically three types of monitor screen out there. LCD,LED and CRT. CRTs (Cathode Ray Tube) are the out-dated type of monitors , due to their looks and size-weight. LED and LCD are the most popular types of display devices . Technically speaking, LCD has Crystals for the display of pixels and LED has diodes at the back-side for the same.

Power Consumption

As LED screens uses less light , the power consumption would be low for sure. Hence, in the area of power consumption , LED screens win the race.

Resolution

Though this thing is slightly related with the size of screen , it is better to explain it as a separate topic. Resolution of screen is quoted as width X height (in pixels) , for the entire screen. 1024 x 768 , 1366 x 768 , 1280 x 720 and 1920 x 1080 are the most popular screen resolutions . One should not choose the one with the highest resolution , as it makes not much difference in routine work. If you are purchasing monitor for graphics or gaming related works, you should go for the best resolution.

Size

Screen size is one of the most important aspect , as far as the computer monitors are concerned. If there is a space constraint , 14 or 15 inch is more suitable. However, any screen size up to 22 inch is desirable . 17 inch and 19 inch have been the all time favourite sizes for monitors among all types of users. For LED Screens , 19 inch and 20 inch gives the best results.

HD or Non – HD

This topic is covered for For non-advanced users and beginners. Now a days , most of the monitor screens have resolutions of 1280 X 720 or higher. That means, most of the monitors come with HD display. However, the screen resolution of 1920 X 1080 is considered as Full HD or True HD , as there are 1080 pixels in the height.

Hardware support

Hardware like graphic card – video card play very important role in the display quality . If there is a graphic card (preferably dedicated) of 1 GB or more, you should consider buying a True HD LED for the best viewing experience. For graphic cards less than 1 GB , you can go for any type of display screen.
