How to set Custom DNS in your PC or Android Device

A tutorial on how to change from default DNS to Google DNS or OpenDNS in various devices like PC / Laptop or Android mobile phone or tablet easily.

DNS –Domain Name System is a distinct system to name devices , services and resources. In simple terms , it converts the domain names into IP Addresses.

There are times when you need to change your existing default provided by your ISP for several reasons like speed, security and very low downtime. Remember that changing the Domain Name System does not change the IP address.

There are two famous Name Systems out there over the internet . Let us discuss for each of them in detail with a tutorial on how to change or set Domain Name System on various devices.

Reasons why you need to change DNS for your devices

In countries like India, there are frequent needs to change the DNS , due to several issues at the ISP Level like security and frequent downtimes .

  • Speed
  • Security
  • No downtime and  High availability
  • Non Redirections to wrong or bad URLs

Though you can easily set up the same right from your router or modem , it is advisable to set it in device itself , so that , you can use those settings even on other connection

How to change DNS for PC or Laptop

To change Domain Name System on your PC or laptop , go to adaptors (Network Connections) and choose the connection (Wi Fi or LAN).

Go to the connection properties by right clicking on the connection icon and navigating to properties.

On the dialog box, you will find a list of items , being used by the connection. from this list , select Internet Protocol v4 (IPv4) and go to properties.

Under the next dialog box, you will find two parts : First one for IP Addresses and second one for DNS.

On the second part, check the radio button against ‘Use the following DNS Server Addresses

Add addresses for respective Domain Name Systems.

DNS Setting in Windows 7 for Google DNS

 

(a) For Google-DNS -

In the first box type 8.8.8.8

In the second box, type 8.8.4.4

(b) For OpenDNS

In the first box, type 208.67.222.222

In the second box, type 208.67.220.220

After successfully entering the addresses , save these settings with OK button.

You’ll surely see the difference in terms of speed and other aspects.

How to change DNS for Android devices (phones / tablets )

If you want to change Domain Name System for Android devices, go to Wi Fi Settings (Wireless and Network settings) from setting menu and go to Advanced options .

Under these options , check ‘Use Static IP’ option. Now, you’d be able to see the DNS1 and DNS2 options as active.

How to set Google DNS on Android

According to your desired Domain Name System (Google-DNS or OpenDNS) , add addresses in a separate options, i.e. first address in DNS1 box, and second address in DNS2 box.

With these set of tutorials , you can easily set up custom Domain Name System for your devices.
